Our History

Carey Group History – Standing the test of time

The Carey Group began in 1951 with humble beginnings when a young Townsville accountant, Brian Carey moved to take up a job opportunity in Ingham. With wife Eunice, Brian settled in Ingham and commenced work in the accounting firm of Larry Kelly.

Soon after commencing in Ingham, Mr Kelly sadly passed away, leaving Brian to run the practice. Resourcefulness and willingness to learn quickly served Brian well and lay the foundations for the firm.

In the 1960s John Hackett joined Brian and firm traded as Carey & Hackett until 1976.

Joined by his eldest sons, John and Robert – the company was renamed BJ Carey and Company and continued to grow. John left the firm in the 1980s to commence his own accounting ventures in Airlie Beach. Son, Joseph joined the practice in 1988 and the firm changed its name to Carey Accountants in the early 2000s.

The practice not only continues the family tradition, but seeks to provide the expertise and technical infrastructure of a contemporary accounting firm, while still maintaining the traditional values of personalized service and advice.

Robert and Joe, together with fellow Directors Colin Lea, Daniel Hogan, Nikeeta Guazzo, Matthew Carey and Peter Cavallo, now take responsibility for the management of the Carey Group. The group provides accounting and financial services and solutions within North Queensland and throughout Australia.
